Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter of their family. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker at the age of an infant She was required to provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to do a photo shoot for a magazine about crime and drama, however no theater jobs were forthcoming. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. She earned money by working during the day working as an Usherette. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
